There’s a little surprise inside every cube! Each translucent outer die contains a smaller die, generating two values with a single roll and turning number practice into an invitation to investigate.

With six number dice and six dot dice, this 12pc set brings variety to counting, calculation and classroom games. The generous 4cm outer cubes offer a colourful, hands-on way to explore numbers at home, in learning groups or during individual support sessions.

From recognising numbers to working with them.

Dot dice invite children to count the spots and, with practice, recognise familiar arrangements without counting each dot individually, a skill known as subitising. Number dice provide opportunities to recognise numerals and connect written symbols with quantities.

Use the two types alongside one another to explore different ways of representing a number. Roll, name the value, then show that quantity with counters, fingers or a drawing. It’s a simple way to build connections between what a number looks like and what it means.

Two values, one ready-made maths challenge

Each roll gives learners a pair of values to work with. Add them together, find the difference between the larger and smaller values, or multiply them as confidence grows.

For younger learners, start by identifying the outer and inner values and comparing them: Which is greater? Which is smaller? Are they equal? Encourage children to explain how they know, using objects or drawings to support their thinking.

Roll a little variety into maths practice

Turn a roll into a counting challenge, a number sentence or a quick mental-maths game. Use one value to decide how many groups to make and the other to decide how many objects belong in each group, making multiplication visible and practical.

For older learners, introduce probability and data handling. Predict which totals might appear, record repeated rolls and compare the results. Are all totals equally likely? The dice offer a hands-on starting point for investigating why some outcomes occur more often than others.

Adapt the activity, keep the curiosity.

The same set can support a simple number-recognition task or a more demanding calculation challenge. Use a single die for focused practice, or share the set across pairs and small groups for collaborative games.

Taking turns, checking answers and discussing strategies make mathematical language part of the activity. Rather than simply asking for an answer, try: “What did you notice?” or “Can you show me another way?”
