Geo Sticks 192pc

Geo Sticks 192pc

R 199.00

Don’t just look at a shape. Build it, change it and discover what makes it work.

How many sides make a triangle? Can a four-sided shape look different and still have four sides? What happens to an angle when you move two connected sticks?

Geo Sticks turn geometry into something learners can hold, manipulate and investigate. With 192 assorted colourful connecting pieces, this versatile maths resource invites children to construct 2D shapes, compare lengths and explore geometric relationships through practical experimentation.

From early shape recognition to more challenging investigations, the focus is on understanding, not simply memorising a shape’s name.

Build a foundation in geometry: Start with simple shapes and explore their features together. Count sides and corners, compare straight and curved boundaries, and describe what makes one shape different from another.

Build triangles, squares, rectangles and other polygons, then challenge learners to create a different example of the same shape. A long, narrow rectangle and a shorter, wider one offer a useful starting point for discussing which properties stay the same, even when a shape’s appearance changes.  Hands-on exploration helps children look beyond familiar pictures and recognise shapes by their properties.

Make angles meaningful: Use connected sticks to model an angle, then change the opening and observe what happens. Compare smaller and larger angles, introduce acute, right and obtuse angles, and practise explaining the differences.

For learners ready to measure, pair their constructions with a protractor to connect an angle’s appearance with its measurement in degrees. Building and adjusting an angle gives mathematical language a visible reference point, helping learners discuss what they notice.

Explore length, perimeter and spatial relationships: Compare pieces by length, arrange them in order or select suitable sticks to construct a particular shape. Investigate how changing a side length affects the result and consider which pieces are needed to complete a design.

Introduce perimeter by tracing the outside boundary of a constructed shape. Older learners can measure its straight sides with a ruler and add the lengths to find the total distance around it.

Create designs that include parallel and perpendicular lines, or arrange matching shapes to explore symmetry. Each construction becomes an opportunity to use geometry vocabulary in context.

Questions such as “How do you know?” and “Can you make it another way?” help extend the activity beyond building into genuine mathematical discussion.

During individual support or therapist-guided activities, the connecting pieces also offer opportunities to practise fine-motor control, hand-eye coordination and using both hands together, while keeping the learning goal centred on maths.
