Play with purpose.

As children position and balance the blocks, they practise fine-motor control and hand-eye coordination. Turning pieces, comparing shapes and planning structures creates opportunities to develop spatial reasoning, problem-solving and an understanding of balance.

Sorting by colour or shape, copying patterns and creating symmetrical designs bring early maths into play. Building together also encourages conversation, cooperation and turn-taking, with plenty of reasons to use words such as “above”, “beside”, “between”, “taller” and “under”.

Try a colour-sorting challenge, build a structure from a simple drawing, or create half a pattern and invite a child to complete its mirror image. For collaborative play, take turns adding one block to a shared construction and see where the idea leads.

Teachers and therapists can adapt the activity to the learner: begin with matching and simple arrangements, then introduce pattern sequences, design challenges or more precise placement. Leave room for free exploration, too. Sometimes the most meaningful learning starts with “I wonder what happens if…”
